Draft Action Research Report

TITLE

College Readiness and The Economic Impact of College Remedial Impact

NEEDS ASSESSMENT

Annually our district graduates and sends students into the world of higher education.  Many of these students are required to enroll into remedial classes at the college or university of their choice.  Many of these students meet all admission requirements with the exception of the state assessment.  As a future leader in educational administration I am researching the potential for the improvement of content and strategies used in the classroom to more aptly prepare students to take the Texas Higher Education Assessment (THEA).

OBJECTIVES AND VISION OF THE ACTION RESEARCH PROJECT

Huntington High School will improve the performance of students on the THEA test and reduce the number of students who must enroll in remedial classes upon entrance into the college or university of their choice.  I will use AEIS data from 2010 and 2011.  I will compare district level benchmark data through DMAC, TAKS scores, and CCRS standards with THEA scores to determine if there is a specific area for improvement.  According to the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, 50% of Texas students entering higher education need remedial classes to be prepared for college level work.

LITERATURE REVIEW

The majority of my research is being done through a pragmatic approach.  The main substance of my research will be the data gathered from the AEIS report and campus level scores.  I will also use information from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board.

ARTICULATE THE VISION

The vision is to see improved scores on the THEA test to potentially save our students money upon entering higher education.  With the increasing cost of higher education, the omission of remedial classes that do not count toward graduation could be a drastic saving even when considering a small graduating class.  What can the administration and staff of Huntington High School do to improve the college readiness of our students?  Is there a problem with strategies used in the junior and senior level classes?

MANAGE THE ORGANIZATION

I am the primary researcher in the project.  The assistant principal of curriculum and the campus counselor are aiding me in the collection of data.  I will use the data to determine any trends if any.  Once I have found potential areas for improvement my campus principal will review the data and determine how the problems will be addressed bases on my recommendations.

MANAGE OPERATIONS

I am manipulating and assimilating the data in a manner that will allow for comparisons against college readiness standards state averages and averages of other surrounding schools.  I am interested if there will a definite area of need to address.  If there is a trend in THEA scores in one particular standard we could work to improve our students scores and potentially save them from being required to take remedial courses.

RESPOND TO COMMUNITY INTEREST AND NEEDS

Our district is a lower income area with many of our constituency residing below the poverty level.  Money is a big issue and if the school could potentially help with saving families money it would be well received.  My campus principal and I have discussed providing tutorials before the THEA test is given to reassure our students on standards tested in the test.

College Readiness AR Progress

Action Research Project Title: College Readiness and High School Seniors Blog URL: http://cliftonactionresearch.blogspot.com/ Number of AR Project Documented Hours: 20 AR Project Summary: Up to this point with the help of the high school counselor and administrators I have been collecting test data which includes TAKS, PSAT, SAT, ACT, and benchmark testing data. I have collected college readiness indicators and I am compiling a list of these indicators. I will make a control group of indicators to compare student data against. I will use this information to determine our seniors college readiness based on these standards. Once I have determined based on these indicators that students are either college ready or not I will note if they have been accepted to their college or university of choice. I originally was going to use only information from the 2011 – 2012 school year. I have since decided that I have the time and information to utilized information from the current school year as well. With the information that I have collected to this point I have seen some interesting correlation. We have had multiple students that have been accepted to universities and from their testing data I have said to be college ready. Upon acceptance to their university of choice they are told they will have to take remedial classes during their first semester. What I am attempting to find is an indicator of something that we are not doing to prepare our students for college. If we can improve on something that we are doing we can save students time and money on them having to take remedial classes.

Week 2 Assignment Reflection

This week's assignment was very insightful. I was struggling with determining a problem to investigate. After seeing examples of real life inquiries I was able to come up with more concise questions of my own. My initial inclination was to pose questions that were to broad. I have since been able to define more specific questions for inquiry.

Research Topic

I will research TAKS testing data, THEA testing data, SAT score data, and ACT score data to determine if there is any correlation to college admission requirements. I will compare this data with the admission requirements of a pool of universities. These will include University of Texas at Tyler, University of Texas at Austin, Sam Houston State University, and Tarleton State University. There seems to be an increasing number of students who meet admission requirements and are said not to be college ready. Therefore, these students are placed on probation or required to take remedial classes. My intent is to show what deficiencies, if any, can be addressed at our high school to make our graduating seniors more college ready. I believe that this information will be beneficial to our students planning to attend college after graduation.

Reflection on Action Research

Action research was a topic that I knew very little about prior to the start of this course. I have learned that administrative inquiry is different from traditional research. Traditional research is typically done at institutions of higher learning where teaching is viewed as a linear activity that depicts teachers and principals as technicians. These studies are highly complex and are intended for academic audiences. Action research can be utilized at every level of education. The information gained from these inquiries can provide very useful data for educators to base decisions on. Data can be used by teachers to evaluate the effectiveness of their teaching methods. Inquiries done by teachers can produce "by in" that can help kick start the implementation of change. This will be an effective tool for me to use in my current role. I can use action research to gather information about services provided to our special needs students. This information can be used to more effectively provide these services as well as the potential need for future services. I also believe that if a person makes time to conduct these inquiries they can keep their finger on the pulse of the school that they lead.
